This week in the lovely world of Girls Rock ASP, the rockers tackled a big issue in mainstream culture: rape culture and consent. Micah Blaise, a primary school teacher, lead a discussion first explaining the concepts of feminism and patriarchy, giving a good foundation on the structure of rape culture. Rape culture is defined as a concept which links rape and sexual violence to the culture of a society, and in which prevalent attitudes and practices normalize, excuse, tolerate, and even condone rape. Blaming the victim for their ‘irresponsibility’ and attire is often shown, as it was in the recent Steubenville trial and other countless times. Micah and the rockers discussed what consent is thought to be versus what is actually consent, which is actually explicit verbal agreement of a person capable of giving consent (sober and able-minded).

We ended the workshop off with a selfie activity where rockers took selfies posing with a statement about consent. We think consent rocks all the time!
